Possible Solutions To Stop Global Warming: Distributed Solar Powered Homes Combined With Electric Cars!

A very interesting possible solution to stop global warming is distributed solar powered homes combined with electric cars.

If what the author of the above article is saying is true, then there could be a huge revolution in power production that could make it economically possible for solar power to play a big part in the solution to stop global warming.

Here is just one quote from the interview that I found very encouraging:

"Solar is slowly going to begin to unwind the existing utility economics, to the point where utilities decide they have to get in or they risk losing their core business."

Please, check out the interview and then share your thoughts on it below.

Here are some questions to get your juices flowing:

Do you think Travis is right about the future effects of distributed solar power on cars, homes and utilities?

Does this interview cause you to think differently about the possible solutions for to stop global warming?

I think that one day soon we are going to run out of oil, and right now we are fighting in a war over the oil. But nothing is really being done. One day homes will run on wind and or solar power. Maybe solar power will be a good thing and maybe it won't be such a good thing. But look at all the advantages and the disadvantages, at night in order for your car to work in the morning it has to be charged by a battery, but what makes a battery work? Then one day when it rains how in the world does your car work, how will there be any electricity in your house, so you'll be sitting in the dark. But how much will it cost to put solar panels in your home. The economy is getting really bad as it is, the country is in debt beyond belief. So right now should we be starting to prepare ourselves for this disaster that will happen real soon? I say we should, but we need the money to first. That is my opinion.

I think We have to do something before its to late, before many living things will die...

He is definitely right about grid electricity, which vulnerable to extreme weather and sabotage. Not sure about electric cars--seems to me we just drive too much, period--but you've addressed that in another article. Great site--keep up the good work!

i think that we should do something about global warming because i think we might died in some years

if our government werent so thickheaded, we could all find ways of energy without harming the environment, but everyone is so afraid of change and our "quacked out" theories that the only people who will ever convert to solar power are the same people who are replying to this

I definitely agree with him. .. 'coz it would really benefit us...

he is just looking on one point of view building up such huge thermal stations and an entirely new concept will take a lot money which can be used in other benificial ways of preventing global warming and moreover the products and machines used today depend on other resources introducing solar energy suddenly, will result in wastage and dump of all these machines creating a tremendous waste so i think this technology should be introduced gradually but surely

We should find clean Energy as soon as possible I recommend clean energy that's renewable.

    By Randell2007-04-07 05:14:37

Solar power is clean,so as geothermal and hydroelectric so I recommened the three to increase electricity production.Geothermal and Hydroelectric can be included so there will be electricity available in the night Fusion can work too

I totally agree that solar power is about to revolutionalize the way we get energy. In particular, I believe that this company will create a massive change by bringing solar power to the average person.

I dont see solar doing much for the automotive industry, (hydrogen will rule this industry) however I do see solar powering 25% of all US homes and businesses within the next 10-20 years

There is some relatively cheap solar power available for small-scale uses. I'm considering buying some after I move, but I have some reservations. Since I live in Pittsburgh, that's one of the worst areas for solar power. (See http://www.solar4power.com/solar-power-insolation.html .) In any case, you can get enough solar power to run a laptop computer on solar power from either of the following 2 sites: http://www.solar4power.com/solar-power-devices.html http://www.ctsolar.com/Backpacking%20Solar%20Panels.htm The second site seems to be slightly more expensive, but its solar panels produce slightly more power and can be folded up. Still, it won't save you money even if you live somewhere that acutally has sunlight.

According to an article my parents read, the 7th richest man in China made his fortune and is continuing to do so selling solar power systems. He has cut the cost of such systems by 3 for the Chinese. see http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/11/chinas_richest.php Solar is definitely a part of the future. Passive solar systems are winners from the get go. In Thailand the Alternative Technology Association has a model for a solar water heater, using some copper pipe, glass, a recycled oil drum, another recycled tank and rice husk as insulation. Cost about $250 to put together and install. In Thai conditions it will heat water to up to 60 degrees Celsius and then keep it warm enough until morning for about 6 people to shower.- The focus on this design is cost and not maximum heat- anyway who wants 85 degree water for home use. In architecture, particularly in California and the Southwest, there are many homes that with passive solar and insulation require no heating or cooling to stay comfortable year round.

Greetings,

I think he has missed a major player, methane. He eliminates biofuels without a really thorough research, I believe. Yes, ethanol is a joke and wouldn't work without heavily subsidized corn, which is not even the best grain to make it from. Biodiesel could take up a lot of slack if we quit poisoning our pets with used cooking oil in their food. But methane is a virtually untapped biofuel in this country. For many of us, the Nepalese model is much more doable than solar.

Yes, I live in a bright sunny climate with lots of sun. I am 125 miles from the Gulf so I don't get as much cloud as Houston. Yes, solar would work here, so why not? Money! I have a building set up for the panels to go on the roof, I oriented the building so the panels would have the best alignment, but I have no plans of going that route. The system can not pay for itself with my $50-$60 a month electric bill.

I can put in wind and methane for less than a quarter of the cost of a comparable solar system and run my vehicles on it while I am at it.

We need the trees in the city for air quality and have spent years convincing people to plant trees on the south side of their buildings to shade the buildings, so, where can the solar panels go?

I think the wealthy will continue to install solar and it would be nice if they could drive the price down to affordable. I would much rather see solar than nuclear or coal. But I do think it is time for the human race to grow up and realize that we can not have a one size fits all solution. Trying to replace oil with a single answer is a fantasy.

Bright Blessings,
Kim

I think he is correct, but I`d like to see more solar thermal discussed, he focuses on solar electric.

    By Rasha2006-12-03 06:15:04

I think I'm optimist like Travis, because sooner or lter we will be facing this problem so we should be consistent to what we believe to make people lead the way to clean energy.
