Insurance Companies, Global Warming And Politics

Global warming politics are changing and insurance companies are playing a big part.

There is a story in the Christian Science Monitor from October 13, 2006 that talks about how the insurance companies are responding to the issue of global warming, and I find it extremely encouraging.

The article quotes people like Clement Booth, a board member of one of the largest insurance firms in the world, saying things like this:

"Climate change represents an ever-increasing risk, a risk far too great to ignore."

You may find this encouraging too, but are you left wondering how this relates to the politics of global warming?

Here's the connection:

Companies that donate money to politicians have a huge influence on the political process, and the more money a company donates, the bigger it's influence.

It turns out insurance companies are the 7th biggest industry to contribute money to politicians and I think this is a good sign that politicians are going to change their tune on global warming very soon.

How about you? Do you think that insurance companies are going to influence politicians to take global warming more seriously?

If politians are making a step to help in such a way then why dont every one join in the group, there are many ways to control global warming but yet people are just ignored of what is going on in the atmosphere.

This is all and all for publicity and attention which they are getting easily, i m sure dat not even one damn person in these companies would have such intentions for preventing global warming. and anyways all the money which they are putting into it is just and just gonna fall into corrupt politicians who i m sure are not going to use it for such a noble thing. they wont be concerned about the future and our survival but they surely would be concerned about the publicity they are gonna get. However it not only should be these big companies donating loads of money coz dat wont help but it should be us and each person individually who should understand and tackle this problem of global warming best on his or her own level and that's wat makes a difference.

I think, well hope, they will handle globalwarming more seriously now. But the companies will do what they feel or orderd to do. I hope everything goes well and that we get better.

Only time will tell. The insurance businessmen may be afraid of the massive amount of money they will need to pay if the ocean levels really go up and all the "insured" estates go underwater. If this danger is real, the only way they have to avoid paying it is avoiding gobal warming. As says Nancy Skinner, director of eco-lobby group Climate Group, (in the report appointed by Mr. Brown), "the insurance industry has the ability to change behavior, policies and communicate with clients". Let's hope they effectively use their power.

The insurance industry will do what is in its own self interest, it isn't like they are concerned about the future of human existence, however, in this case, these two aspects intertwine, which is good. However, i beleive that its about 10 years too late and look at Africa, politics is a long and drawn out process, i think its up to the individual to just say no to this mass consumer culture and live simply and susatinably.
